Our motive is to try and bring students together through this free website. Year 13s who are thinking about university can search for courses and discuss them with other students though the forums. They can find other students and meet up before starting at their university. Once at University, students can find goods, services, entertainment and accommodation in their university town. With personal profiles, students can find like-minded students to discuss life the universe and everything through private messaging.
> Why Did We Start This?
Two years ago my son, then Year 13, and some of his friends asked me if I would help them with their HE search. Although I am a teacher and have written many UCAS references I had never helped a student search for a course before, that was the job of the careers councillor.
For the first time I encountered a bewildering amount of different courses and entry requirements. So I decided to assemble a first class team - an expert web designer, graphic artist, accountant and myself, an ex lecturer in business - to build a database and make it available to all on a website.
The purpose of the course search was to narrow down the selection to those institutions which offered a course the students liked the sound of with a UCAS Tariff they could achieve.
I would like to think that by making available more information at the initial stages we shall improve students chances of choosing the right course at the right institution. After that they have to complete their investigations in the normal way.
> How are we doing?
Last year we made the database available on the website and were very pleased with the results. Over 20,000 course searches were carried out on www.uni-uk.co.uk. Our database contained over 50,000 courses offered by over 330 institutions. Feedback from students and teachers as to the usefulness of the course search as a starting point was very positive.
This year we want to make the website even better. We have listened to the students' feedback and comments and have added a lot more facilities. The current version of the site went live on the 1st May 2007. We are continually improving the site and adding services that students will find useful, for example we hope to add a swap shop.
> Where are we going?
Our long-term plan is to open in other countries. Keeping strictly to our principle that only students can use the student forums, we would like to see students studying the same subject in different countries discussing their course on the forums - what they are being taught, what they are learning, current hot topics and latest developments. And with private messaging students will be able to talk together all over world.
